Tactology Lab

Since 2021 we organise the so-called Tactology Lab, a multiple-day structured program that brings artists and creators together to explore new ways of (tactile) interaction with electronics.

We believe that expression through tactile electronics can amplify a personal, visible, rousing performance experience, enhancing a strong connection between performer and audience. With Tactology Lab, Sounds Like Touch provides a unique learning space, basic materials and coaching by professionals.

The program fosters the exchange between (local) professional artists and designers, collaborating on new tangible electronic ways of expression for a performance context: either live on stage or in an exhibition setting.

Additionally, the creative processes and the results will be shared via an online platform to provide an international stage to local makers.

NIME 2024

New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), is an international conference about new musical interfaces, their artistic use and the technologies involved in building them. Researchers from all over the world share their knowledge and late breaking work during the conference. The conference started as a workshop at the CHI conference in 2001 and, since then, has been held annually around the world.

NIME2024 was held between September 2 and 6, 2024 in Utrecht. The conference was held physically but with opportunities to follow the conference online as well. This year’s edition is organised by three institutions: Sounds Like Touch, Gaudeamus and HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht). The conference is partly ingrained within the Gaudeamus Festival 2024. This festival annually attracts about 3000 (inter)national visitors and hosts a the Gaudeamus Award, an incentive prize for composers under 35. Visitors at the Gaudeamus Festival are known to not only be interested in New Music but also in new ways of making it. There will also be lots of concerts that are interesting for the NIME audience and an Off-NIME program is part of it.

bromwol

bromwol (2024) is an interactive installation exploring textiles as electronic musical instruments. It is a collaborative project between Dianne Verdonk, Michelle Vossen and Roald van Dillewijn. Literally meaning humming wool, they experimented mainly with carded sheep wool mixed with conductive fibers to create fuzzy interfaces for musical performance. Dianne & Roald performed with bromwol; in between performances the audience was invited to try it out themselves.

bromwol was presented at U? Festival in Utrecht on November 9 2024. The development of bromwol is supported by Sounds Like Touch, a springboard for artists, designers and creators who like to make electronic, performative arts by using their body for interaction.
